Stem cell therapy has the potential to revolutionize modern medicine and clinical trials are already underway. Still, questions persist concerning which parameters (implantation method, size of transplant, timing) produce the best clinical outcomes. Fluorine-19 ( 19 F) MRI provides an excellent tool to address these issues because of the potential for unambiguous detection and accurate quantification. In this study we correlate the change in 19 F-signal quantification over time with fluorescence microscopy and immunohistochemistry. Our results indicate that accurate quantification of the cellular number is possible under some conditions and that 19 F labeling of bystander macrophages can confuse interpretation in certain cases.
