Towards MRI-based measurement of tissue oxygen content

We, and others, are pursuing a technique to measure
tissue oxygenation that takes advantage of the
paramagnetic property of molecular oxygen, as found
dissolved in tissue. Herein, we present a R
1
-based
breathing gas challenge technique that can distinguish
radiation damage from tumor - a distinction which has
been difficult to make using other methods. We further
show that the R
1
of
brain parenchyma can be measured by isolating the R
1
of
bulk water and suppressing flow contributions, and that
breathing of carbogen gas has a direct impact on the R
1
of
brain parenchyma.
