Bi-exponential diffusion analysis in normal prostate and prostate cancer: transition zone and peripheral zone considerations

We investigated the performance of the bi-exponential
fit for extended b-factor DWI (b=0 to 3500 s/mm
2
)
in discriminating between different tissues in prostate
imaging. The means of the fitted parameters, ADC
fast
,
ADC
slow
and
f
slow
(fraction
of ADC
slow
component),
were significantly different between normal tissue (PZ
and TZ) and tumor tissue in both PZ and TZ. There was
also a difference for f
slow
between
normal PZ and TZ (p<0.001). No differences in the
parameters were found between tumors in the PZ and TZ.
The increase of f
slow
in
tumor tissue might represent the occupation of the
luminal space by tumor cells.
