Small bowel motility assessment by dynamic MRI is of increasing interest for the clinical management of enteric disorders such as Crohns disease. A postprocessing technique is described for the automated assessment of bowel motility. The technique jointly registers 2D dynamic images (nonrigidly) and models local intensity changes due to through-plane motion or flow. Validation was performed by drawing various small bowel regions in 10 patients with known or suspected Crohns disease. We assessed the performance of the registration (manual versus automatically propagated markers) as well as the agreement between automated motility measures with expert grading of the motility.
