In
conventional cine MRI, it is observed that the atrioventricular (AV) plane of
the heart descends towards the apex during systole and moves back towards the
atrium during the diastole. The displacement of the AV plane through the cardiac
cycle is an expression of the systolic and diastolic performance of the
heart, so that it can be used to detect early diastolic dysfunction. In this
study, we have investigated the potential of MRI measurement of left AV plane
displacement as a means to assess diastolic dysfunction.
