Regularized diffusion tensor MRI for high angular resolution ODF estimation and fibre tractography

We describe a regularization algorithm that can be used to infermulti-peaked orientation distribution functions (ODFs) from diffusiontensor reconstructions. These ODFs are compared to those obtainedfrom a direct high angular resolution diffusion (HARD) reconstructionscheme, q-ball reconstruction. The performance of the regularizeddiffusion tensor ODFs is compared to that of the diffusion tensorreconstruction in a fibre tracking experiment. It is concluded thatthe regularization algorithm can be used to infer high angularresolution fibre structure from a low angular resolution (singlediffusion tensor) ODF reconstruction.
