Previously we demonstrated the feasibility of quantifying perfusion parameters in human breast tumors using a model-independent deconvolution analysis of DCE-MRI. In this study we applied a refinement of the protocol to a larger cohort of patients and investigated the value of the measured parameters in tumor characterization. Our results suggest that malignant and benign breast tumors may be classified correctly with the proposed measurement and post-processing protocol, in terms of their perfusion values. However, additional parameters such as those obtained from modeling may be needed to achieve full characterization.
