The determination of the arterial input function (AIF) is critical to applications of the two compartment model to tissue contrast agent uptake and washout. As the AIF cannot always be measured directly, approximate methods are sometimes used to derive it, such as using muscle with known K trans and v e values as a reference tissue. Published values for skeletal muscle, such as the calf, are often used, but we show significant differences in K trans and v e between gluteal and deep pelvic muscles. We conclude that skeletal muscles should be characterized individually.
