Increasing the magnetic field strength beyond 7 T is expected to result in an increase of SNR, but this may be limited by the more unfavorable relaxation times, the B 1 inhomogeneity and the more difficult coil design. Here, SNR and MR parameters are compared for field strengths of 3 T, 7 T and 9.4 T. After correction for flip angle variations, a strong gain in SNR of almost a factor of two is found when going from 7 T to 9.4 T, but increasing inhomogeous B 1 -fields and shorter T 2 * demand for improved imaging techniques.
