Radiomic Analysis of Breast Cancer Peritumoral Tissue on Contrast Enhanced MRI Prior to Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy

This study set out to identify key radiomic features in peritumoral breast tissue associated with a high response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy, defined as a >90% reduction of tumor cells. For each case, a tumor label map and 5 distinct masks at 2.5, 5, 10, 15, and 20mm beyond the tumor border were created using pretreatment DCE-MRIs. Fifty-seven metrics were then computed for each mask using the 3D Slicer HeterogeneityCAD module. Using final pathology reports, cases were separated into “low-response” and “high-response” groups. Statistical correlation using univariate Mann-Whitney tests to compare the two response groups ultimately yielded 6 radiomic features.
