Magnetization Transfer Ratio (MTRNOE) as a Biomarker of Hip Osteoarthritis

Loss of cartilage collagen, proteoglycans (PG), glycosaminoglycans (GAG) are responsible for osteoarthritis (OA). MRI biomarkers T₂ (sensitive to collagen), magnetization transfer (MT) and T_1ρ, (sensitive to PG), and GAG_CEST (sensitive to GAG) can detect OA at early stages. Similar to GAG_CEST, CEST signal of Nuclear Overhauser Effect (NOE_CEST) at -1.6ppm also changes with OA. However, unlike GAG_CEST, this NOE_CEST is measurable at 3T which is suitable for hip. MT ratio at this -1.6ppm (MTR_NOE) represents the combination of MT, T₂, NOE_CEST effects. OA-related changes in these three parameters result in decreased MTR_NOE making it a reliable biomarker for OA.
