Determinants of iron accumulation in the normal ageing brain

This study analyzed R2* relaxomentry data from 314
healthy volunteers in various gray matter regions of the
brain with the goal to find determinants for brain-iron
accumulation. 18 factors were analyzed, which were
related to lifestyle, cerebrovascular risk factors,
serum levels of iron and iron-associated gene-snips. BMI
seemed to be the most relevant determinant for increased
R2* values, especially in the hippocampus. This finding
stands in line with the hypothesis that BMI is an
independent risk factor for dementia.
