Rotating frame relaxation rates, T1ρ and T2ρ, are noninvasive and sensitive markers of the neurodegeneration processes in diseases, such as, Alzheimer's and Parkinson's. A comprehensive review of contemporary MRI methods, that can be employed to probe the biophysical mechanisms affecting the T1ρ and T2ρ relaxations of the human tissue, is presented. Spin-Locking and adiabatic radiofrequency irradiation schemes are compared. Additionally, different MRI acquisition strategies for accurate and precise quantitative imaging at the high and ultra-high magnetic field are reviewed.
