In this preliminary study, we used ROI-based functional connectivity of resting-state functional MRI to investigate changes in inter-regional correlations in womens different menstrual phases. Our results showed that the functional connectivity of the left hippocampus and parahippocampus with the bilateral superior occipital gyrus and cuneus, and the right middle frontal gyrus was higher in the early follicular phase than in the mid-luteal phase. The patterns of functional connectivity shown in this study may provide new clues for understanding the mechanism of how spatial abilities are modulated by hormone during menstrual cycle.
