Cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO2) is a key indicator of brain function. We measured oxygen consumption non-invasively by imaging mitochondrial turn-over rate into H217O using inhalations of enriched 17O2 gas combined with 1H-BOLD methods in the same animal and session. We present estimated CMRO2 changes in the rat somatosensory cortex, which are based on chemical shift imaging (CSI) acquisitions colocalized with 1H-BOLD fMRI acquired at a field strength of 16.4 T. The dependence of δCMRO2 and BOLD-signal on the baseline physiology and stimulation parameters are discussed.
