As a consequence of the recent shortage of 3He gas for lung imaging studies, alternative methods for the assessment of pulmonary function have received much attention. A very promising approach utilizes time-resolved ultra-short echo time data acquisitions of the native proton signal using a balanced steady-state free-precession (bSSFP) sequence with subsequent image registration and Fourier decomposition to construct perfusion and ventilation-weighted images. The objective of this work is to study the feasibility of k-t undersampling in conjunction with the k-t PCA reconstruction framework for accelerating dynamic bSSFP image acquisition of the lung.
