One
of the primary functions of insulin is disposal of glucose from the blood and
inhibition of hepatic glucose production (HGP). Dysfunction of either of these processes
can cause development of type II diabetes. Incomplete suppression of HGP is a
strong indication of insulin resistance and may be an early marker for
development of type II diabetes. Current methods to evaluate insulin
resistance are complicated, invasive and hence not used in routine practice.
Here we demonstrate feasibility of using BOLD MRI to monitor oxygenation
changes in the liver following glucose which may be related to insulin
sensitivity.
