Girdle muscular dystrophy Type 2C is characterized by a deficiency in
γ-sarcoglycan, a protein associated with the dystrophin-glycoprotein
complex on the cell membrane. In this
study, the effects of a lack of γ-sarcoglycan (Sgsg-/-) and dystrophin (mdx)
on cardiac function and myocardium T2 in old mice were examined. The findings indicate that Sgsg-/- and mdx have a reduced left ventricular ejection fraction compared to
age-matched controls, with no differences in Sgsg-/- and mdx. Also, a shorter T2 was observed in the
myocardium of Sgsg-/- compared to
controls, suggesting an increased prevalence of fibrosis in Sgsg-/-.
