The
gradual liquefaction of the ocular vitreous body with age can lead to retinal
detachment and loss of sight. Although
retinal detachment is a simple condition to diagnose, historically, means to
evaluate the mechanical properties of the vitreous body have been invasive
and technically challenging. The
development of a reliable, noninvasive measurement technique would improve
our understanding of the underlying physiology of this condition, and aid in
evaluating patients and potential treatments.
The purpose of this work was to investigate the utility of MR
elastography as a noninvasive means to quantify the viscoelastic properties
of the vitreous body.
