Silicon-based detector coils could be manufactured very cheaply in bulk, so they seem an attractive possibility for single use applications such as for insertion into tumours and other tissues for real-time spectroscopy during interventional surgery. We describe the design, manufacture and the first in vivo trial of a silicon needle coil for 31P spectroscopy at 81MHz.
