Due to the existence of physiological noise, the SNR efficiency and temporal resolution for 3D fMRI can be improved by using a partial-k method. In the partial-k method, doubling high frequency components result in twice as much noise from those components. However, in sum these contributions are still relatively small compared to those from low frequency components where physiological noise dominates. For the same scan time, the benefit from increased time frames will overcome the SNR decrease by using the partial-k method which will result in a better SNR efficiency and temporal resolution.
