Diffusion tensor (DT) imaging is a powerful tool to delineate fiber directionality. For pure fiber orientation, the DT model, which is characterized by six degrees of freedom, is used to characterize diffusion directionality. When two or more divergent fibers are present, the degrees of freedom are increased, but it is unclear if diffusion measurements have the necessary degrees of freedom to resolve the presence of multiple fibers. The aim of the present study was to examine if, based on the DT description, multiple fiber orientations present in a voxel will permit the measurement of more than 6 degrees of freedom.
