An optimization procedure based on the Genetic Algorithm and full-wave electromagnetic simulations is proposed for RF coil array design in SENSE imaging. With the appropriate definition of the cost function, this procedure is applied to a 24-channel head coil array design for brain imaging at 7.0 Tesla. Results show that the optimized design requires overlap for each row of coils and gaps between different rows. The higher the SENSE rate is, the wider the inter-row gap size is required.
