High spatial resolution fMRI mapping of digit topography and the funneling illusion in SI cortex of the anesthetized squirrel monkey

Intrinsic optical imaging can be used to map cortical activations with high spatial and temporal resolution but is limited by the accessibility of the area of interest and the need for surgery to expose the cortex. With the static field strengths now available for fMRI in both animals and humans, the prospect of non-invasive functional imaging studies of cortical and subcortical areas with high spatial resolution is now at hand. To test the ability of high field fMRI to achieve high spatial resolution, we examined whether fMRI could map the neural correlates of the tactile funneling illusion in SI.
