An insoluble Gd-DTPA-chelate was developed and tested for conditional activation by intracellular lipases in dendritic cells. The concept of an insoluble, responsive T1-contrast agent has the advantage of zero relaxivity in the inactive state. The contrast agent was also feasible for detection of implanted cells in rats in vivo.
