While the actual field close to superparamagnetic iron oxide (SPIO) loaded cells will certainly be very different from that of a magnetic dipole, far from the cell where field inhomogeneities are most effective the field distribution will closely resemble that of a magnetic dipole. Using a numerical approach we treat SPIO loaded cells as magnetic dipoles in a homogeneous magnetic field and compute the 3D frequency distribution and MR signal decay. The numerical results and experimental findings show non-monoexponential signal decay due to single SPIO loaded cells.
