The Monte Carlo simulations of restricted diffusion in 3D branching labyrinths of a model pulmonary acinus has revealed the appearance of the localization regime at high gradient intensity. This non-Gaussian regime is well known for porous materials and characterized by a stretch-exponential decay of the NMR signal as a function of the gradient strength. It gave the best fit for numerical data, as compared to the classical isotropic and anisotropic Gaussian models. These findings should be taken into account for future analysis of in vivo data.
