Synopsis: Proton MRS (3.4cc single voxel) was used to assess the metabolic changes in right/left frontal white matter, left parietal white matter and left occipital gray matter and 31P spectrum from right skeletal muscle of subjects with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM2) and subjects affected with both DM2 and hypothyroidism. In DM2 a reduction in NAA/Cr in the frontal white matter and occipital gray matter, increased Cho/Cr value in occipital gray matter and reduction in PCr/Pi and an elevation in PDE/ATP values (in muscle) were observed. The changes are attributed to impaired energy metabolism and neuronal loss in these patients.
