In this work the single vessel model was employed to estimate the blood oxygenation level of veins. The theoretical signal decay was investigated and verified by numerical and analytical simulations as well as in phantom measurements. The signal decay was found to be dependent on the voxel shape for vessels, which were oriented perpendicular to the main magnetic field due to the extravascular field inhomogeneities. The in vivo values of the blood oxygenation level extracted from the signal curves of a multi-echo gradient-echo sequence were in good agreement with values from physiology.
