A new, three-dimensional model of the cardiac ventricles is proposed. It relies on a description with surface harmonics in a prolate spheroidal coordinate system. We show how the standard method, which applies only to closed, star-shaped surfaces, can be extended to model open surfaces as well as the non star-shaped right-ventricle. This shape model allows to perform a functional analysis on the basis of both short-axis and long-axis cine acquisitions. Different volume computation methods obtained with the proposed model are presented and compared to the traditional Simpsons rule. The advantages of combining slices with different orientations are discussed.
