The intrinsic sensitivity of MRI to flow offers the unique possibility to acquire spatially registered information about vascular hemodynamics simultaneously with the morphological data within a single experiment. In this study, blood flow characteristics associated with common aortic pathologies were analyzed and compared to healthy controls using time resolved and respiration controlled 3D velocity MR mapping. 3D blood flow visualization revealed considerable alterations in local blood flow characteristics compared to normal volunteers. Specifically, relatively small geometric changes such as prosthesis implantation or mild ascending aortic aneurysm resulted in major disturbances of local vascular hemodynamics.
