Imaging microvascular flow distributions using residue function shape characteristics

DSC-MRI is widely used for determination of perfusion parameters such as CBF, CBV and MTT which are used for assessing tissue viability in acute stroke. However, important information about the capillary flow patterns contained in the residue function is not quantified. We use a previously published vascular model to estimate perfusion parameters as well as residue function shape characteristics. Simulations demonstrate that the algorithm can identify a large class of residue functions from exponential to box-car. In a case of acute MCA occlusion we show that different microvascular flow profiles may underlie perfusion lesions observed on CBF and MTT maps.
