There have been reports on the change of the longitudinal relaxation time T1 related to the neuronal activity but these results are inferred from T1-weighted scans rather than direct T1 measurement. Recently, a rapid method of T1 mapping has been developed which is capable of obtaining T1 values at a time resolution feasible for brain fMRI. With this novel method, we have detected neuronal activation by direct mapping of the longitudinal relaxation time.
