Hyperpolarization of 13C exceeding 10,000 fold allows sub-second in vivo imaging and spectroscopy. Contrast agents are administered at concentrations of 0.3 0.5M, creating toxic, hyperosmolar and redox-metabolic stress which may mask the biological interpretation. This Abstracts establishes the lower limit of in vivo detection of hyperpolarized 13C with the aim of creating physiologically acceptable experimental conditions for this novel technology. Hyperpolarized 13C MRI is demonstrated in the 1 10 mM range.
