Abacus mental calculation (AMC) experts refer to those who have been trained and also demonstrated extraordinary capability of mental calculation. In this study, child AMC experts and nonexperts were required to perform mental calculations through visual stimuli during MRI scanning sessions. We found a substantially different functional connectivity networks for child AMC experts and non-experts during mental calculation experiments. It demonstrates that the different neural networks and functional connectivity degree of mental calculation between two groups may be related to the cognitive strategies implied in the processing of mental calculation.
