Stroke lesion detection is improved using diffusion-weighted Propeller imaging when compared with standard single-shot EPI DWI methods, particularly for very small lesions. We investigate the mechanisms of this small lesion improvement, particularly local susceptibility from T2* effects due to increased deoxyhemoglobin concentrations. Results show that Propeller diffusion imaging improves lesion conspicuity when compared to standard single shot EPI diffusion methods and thus provides a better estimate of total stroke.
