The substantia nigra, subthalamic nucleus, and red
nucleus are important structures in the study of
Parkinsons disease and all three structures contain
high concentrations of iron. A hallmark of Parkinsons
disease is the increased deposition of iron in the
substantia nigra and red nucleus as well as the loss of
dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra. This study
compares volumetric estimates of the substantia nigra,
subthalamic nucleus, and red nucleus. Statistically
significant volumetric difference between parkinsons
disease and control groups in the red nucleus and the
phase difference between the two groups in the
substantia nigra are reported.
