WHITE MATTER LESIONS ACCOUNT FOR APATHY SYMPTOMS IN AMNESTIC MILD COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT: A VOXEL BASED LESION SYMPTOM MAPPING STUDY

This study, using Voxel-based lesionsymptom mapping (VSLM) and Voxel Based Morphometry analysis (VBM), investigated the contribution of White Matter lesions and regional grey matter atrophy in determining behavioural symptoms in patients with amnestic mild cognitive impairment (a-MCI), which is widely regarded as a prodromal stage of Alzheimer disease. Behavioural symptoms were quantified by Neuropsychiatric Inventory-12 (NPI-12). The main finding of the study was that a selective and bilateral lesion damage to the anterior thalamic radiation (ATR) was strictly associated to the presence and severity of patients apathy, in the absence of any contribution from regional grey matter loss.
